For January my friend and I discussed which book we should read and we chose one that was once banned. I searched through a list of previously banned books and settled on this.
2016 Reading Challenge: a book that was banned at some point. *Update: In 2019 there was an Amazon Prime exclusive show consisting of 6 episodes. This show was out for only a week when a huge petition went out to have it cancelled. Still ruffling feathers after all these years.
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman
After I started reading this book I couldn’t find a reason that it was banned on the internet anywhere. The original list that I got it from seemed to have no reason why. But I can say after reading it that there might be some people that were upset about it somewhere. This book was absolutely HILARIOUS! I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions and my husband would ask why I was laughing and it was just too hard to explain. The jokes are intertwined so perfectly that you cannot explain them in one sentence. It is like the authors had a series of inside jokes that they were writing for each other and they included the reader.
The gist of the story is about an angel and a demon that have spent many hundreds of thousands of years on planet earth. They form a sort of bond over their inevitable affection of humanity. Aziraphale our angel loves books (a man of my own heart) while Crowley (aka Crawly) loves classic cars and Queen, or his classic car loves Queen. They are living quite happily enacting little battles of good and evil with each other when Crowley gets news of the impending Apocalypse. They set out to stop it.
Lovely cast of characters. My favorite character (as it always seems to be with Pratchett) was of course DEATH. The other horsemen were alright too. The deeper information about demonology and such was pretty on point as well.
I really enjoyed this book. It made me want to pick up the Discworld books again.
