Campside Shawl

Pattern on Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/campside

Yarn: Pattons Cotton in Navy 6 skeins

Needles: US 7 magic loop

This was my first shawl. It was a lovely pattern that knit up wonderfully. The cotton that I chose was not the very best yarn but was nice to work with, and it had the weight I was looking for. With it’s yarn overs increasing slightly as the pattern goes on, it opens up to be a very breathable piece.

While I was knitting it, my kitty Batman decided to help me. He was more interested in sitting on my almost completed shawl.

Batman is helping hold the knitting down. It was moving too much.

There were two panels to work on, so it is definitely a beginners shawl. I wanted this to be a nice heavy shawl that I could were around the house to keep me warm, OR I could wear it as an accessory.

When it was finished I did a regular bind off, so the end it really tight. I would suggest using a stretchy bind off if you choose to do this pattern. Very pink Knits has a great video showing how to do one. You can also just look up Jenny’s Stretchy Bind-off.

You can see the increase in Yarn Overs a little in this picture. I have not yet blocked the shawl. I am still new at blocking (meaning I’ve never done it), so I am not sure if it will turn  out better.

What did I learn:

  • Yarn-overs are super easy to do.
  • Shawls typically have two panels or sides on either side of a center stitch.
  • Stretchy bind-off is best for shawls.
  • Decreases can be fun!

*UPDATE 3/05/2017 – I gave this shawl to my Grandmother on her 90th birthday party. You can read about that on the RCYC: 2017 Mystery Knit-A-Long (Klickitat Street Cowl) post.
